A newspaper is a source of multiple pieces of written news, information or opinion on current or recent events in the world, though it can also feature non-written sources of news. While in the past newspapers have been collections of individual sheets of paper by necessity, the advent of the Internet and its use as a source of news has led to the newspaper term being applied to news in digital form, as well as to physical newspapers. While video and audio content was previously thought to signal the death knell for newspapers, both of these forms of content have been folded into use for online newspapers, and the usually greater depth of written content is an indispensable supplement to complete reportage of important news events. The first instance of a newspaper being printed is somewhat open to debate, depending on the definition of newspaper being used. If we assume that any source of multiple pieces of written news on recent or current events can be classed as a newspaper, then early bulletins in Ancient China and Ancient Rome can be considered newspapers. The modern idea of what people consider to properly be a newspaper, however, printed on large sheets of paper and featuring writing by early journalists would date to the 17th century and the use of movable type. Some documents that existed before the use of movable type are also considered early examples of newspapers, but it was movable type that revolutionised the publication of written news and led to its popular consumption. The future of news is not entirely sure, but one thing is clear: it will be online. With the ability to publish immediately by putting news on the Internet, the mere reportage of events will necessarily move into the online realm as readers search for up-to-the-minute news. Additionally, columns and other opinion pieces in newspapers are being subverted by the rise of blogging, where anyone can publish their opinion for all to see. Twitter is also becoming a massively important source of news, with many major news organisations relying on Twitter to get information from dangerous locales. With news easily searched for and found online, many people are beginning to get their news from a variety of sources, rather than the single news source monopoly held by newspapers in times past.
There are a wide range of different newspaper types and formats that have been used throughout the years, but a few dominate in the UK. These are generally the broadsheet and the tabloid. While both of these newspaper formats have become synonymous with the content within ñ tabloids generally being sensationalised and broadsheets reporting on more serious news ñ they are actually just different standards for the printing of the newspaper. Tabloids are smaller and do not need to be folded horizontally like a broadsheet. On the other end, broadsheets are very large and will usually be folded horizontally when stored, so their size can be somewhat unwieldy. A happy medium between the two, the Berliner format, tends to require folding for storage, but is easier to handle than a full broadsheet format newspaper.

The most popular online newspaper in the UK is by far The Guardian. Its online popularity can probably be put down to its reputation as a quality broadsheet, while its increasing print popularity may be somewhat attributable to its use of the Berliner format, making it easier to handle than many broadsheets while avoiding the stigma of the tabloid format. The Daily Telegraph is the most popular of the print broadsheets, though it does not enjoy the same popularity online, possibly due to its political leanings that may not appeal to the generally younger audience of online news sites. Aside from the broadsheets, which supply most people with their serious news source, tabloids like The Sun and The News of the World tend to be quite popular due to their opinionated views and the phenomena of page three girls.
